Zavelier · The perfumers
A new sense of proportion in modern floral perfumery
Sophia Grojsman’s childhood in Belarus was filled with the scents of garden flowers, especially rose and jasmine. After studying chemistry, she moved to New York and joined IFF, learning perfumery under Ernest Shiftan. Her career would place her among the influential creators of modern American fine fragrance.
Grojsman became known for rethinking the proportions of a perfume. By using a material at an unusually high level, she could make an ingredient normally associated with the background perceptible from the opening. That structural approach, combined with her lasting fascination with rose, helped give her compositions a recognizable identity.
Her work includes Lancôme Trésor, represented in the Zavelier collection, and extends to projects with Frédéric Malle. In 2016, The Fragrance Foundation recognized her career with its Perfumer of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. Her legacy lies in both the fragrances themselves and the possibilities she opened for building a composition around a bold central accord.
