Where pharmacy, perfume and the stars meet
Sofia Bardelli decided she wanted to become a perfumer after watching a documentary about Grasse. She first completed a degree in pharmacy, then gained admission to the Grasse Institute of Perfumery. In her own account, that acceptance turned an ambition into a profession she could realistically pursue.
With her sister Fabiola, she founded In Astra, a fragrance house launched in 2020 around their shared interest in stars and the universe. Astronomy provides a meeting point between art and science, echoing the technical knowledge and imagination required to compose a perfume.
Bardelli begins each star-inspired creation with its stories: scientific, mythological and philosophical associations can all suggest materials and accords. She considers the fragrance and its presentation together, using texture and visual details to extend the idea beyond the scent itself. Her description of the profession emphasizes continued training and learning through the work, with signed creations gradually establishing a perfumer’s voice.
