Zavelier · The perfumers
An independent house founded after a change from a banking career
Rania Jouaneh grew up in Jordan surrounded by flowers, markets and the spices used in daily cooking. Those experiences formed an early sensory education, even before she considered perfumery as a profession.
She first studied international affairs and business, then worked in banking. After many years in Paris, she decided to return to her interest in scent and enrolled at Cinquième Sens.
Her independent house, Rania J., gave that change of direction a creative form. Compositions including Lavande 44 and Jasmin Kama show the importance of recognisable materials within her work. In a first-person interview, Jouaneh distinguished the techniques learned at school from the personal memories that enter a composition. Both are needed: a thorough knowledge of raw materials provides the tools, while experience and emotion help determine what a perfume should communicate.
