Zavelier · The perfumers
A scientific route to an imaginative and individual perfume practice
Ralf Schwieger initially weighed an interest in science against the possibility of an artistic career. He chose chemistry, later specialising in fragrance chemistry with the intention of working in fine perfume.
At thirty, he left Berlin for Grasse to develop that ambition. His subsequent work has included commissions for Atelier Cologne and État Libre d’Orange, among other houses.
In an interview, Schwieger identified both Edmond Roudnitska’s clarity and Germaine Cellier’s audacity as important points of admiration. His own credited fragrances include Orange Sanguine, Vanille Insensée and Fils de Dieu. These different compositions show how a creator can move between citrus, warm materials and less conventional combinations without being confined to one style. His career connects an analytical understanding of ingredients with the freedom to use them as a means of artistic expression and personal discovery.
