Olivier Cresp | Perfumer

Zavelier · The perfumers

A Grasse material heritage and an appetite for new fragrance ideas

Olivier Cresp grew up in Grasse in a family trading flowers and fragrance materials. Jasmine, rose, tuberose, fruit trees and his grandmother’s cooking supplied an early world of smells and tastes.

His career includes Angel for Thierry Mugler, launched in 1992, a landmark in the development of modern gourmand perfumery. Other credits include Nina and shared work on Black Opium, showing the range of ideas that can grow from a close understanding of materials.

Cresp describes a particular interest in perfumes that recall the pleasures and reassurance of earlier life. Food memories are one source, but the aim is a fragrance rather than a literal recipe. His interviews connect invention with enjoyment: an ingredient or familiar association can be reworked until it offers something new on skin. The work brings a traditional material education into dialogue with changing tastes and the possibilities of contemporary composition.
