Zavelier · The perfumers
An analytical education that opened into creative perfumery
Nathalie Templer studied chemistry in France before beginning her career at a small Grasse company. Three years there introduced her to production, quality control, research and sales, giving her a broad view of the industry.
She then spent ten years at Mane as a perfumer analyst, specialising in gas chromatography and mass spectrometry while studying the smells of natural and synthetic materials. Experience in Dubai preceded a move to Expressions Parfumées, where she developed her creative practice as a perfumer.
In a first-person interview, Templer described the importance of direct work with clients and of collaboration with other creators. Her years in Dubai also challenged assumptions about the experience of women working in the region’s fragrance industry. Her career connects a detailed analytical knowledge of ingredients with the different judgement required to build a perfume: selecting an idea, balancing its materials and communicating with the people behind a project.
