Zavelier · The perfumers
A chemist’s education and an instinctive, generous fragrance style
Maurice Roucel grew up in Normandy without a family connection to perfumery. He was working as a chemist at the CNRS, specialising in gas chromatography, before a series of encounters led him towards fragrance.
He joined Chanel’s laboratory in 1973 and developed his composition skills through self-directed study. Scientific precision remained a foundation, but his later account of the career describes a path guided by intuition and emotion as much as formal academic preparation.
Roucel’s work has become closely associated with musk, white flowers and warm amber effects. Musc Ravageur for Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle provides a clear expression of that sensibility, developed from his own material preferences rather than a passing fashion. In 2025, a celebration of fifty years in creation recognised the wider span of his career. His work connects exacting laboratory knowledge with a strong appetite for texture, sensuality and a complete fragrance presence.
