Scientific study and a personal creative language at Cartier
Mathilde Laurent studied chemistry at Jussieu before training at ISIPCA. While still completing her education, she began working at Guerlain, entering the profession through close practical experience as well as formal study.
Her later role as Cartier’s house perfumer provided a setting for an individual creative voice within a wider tradition of design and craftsmanship. Her work includes fragrances such as Baiser Volé, La Panthère and Carat.
In an extended interview, Laurent described the breadth of the scientific education behind her training, from chemistry and physics to zoology. Yet that knowledge serves an imaginative task: creating an invisible composition capable of communicating a feeling or image. Her career brings together the discipline needed to understand materials and the freedom to develop a personal idea. The finished perfume must connect those two aspects through its structure, its evolution and the experience of the person wearing it.
