Zavelier · The perfumers
A culinary scent memory and a career moving towards independence
Mark Buxton was born in England to a British father and German mother, moving to Germany as a child. His parents’ restaurant gave him an early education in smells: herbs, spices, bread, coffee and the aromas of cooking.
He first considered fashion design and studied geology before an unexpected route led him into perfumery. His professional career later included work for major brands such as Givenchy, Burberry and Versace, alongside more experimental commissions for Comme des Garçons and Biehl Parfumkunstwerke.
Buxton eventually developed his own fragrance collection. In a first-person interview, he connected the spicy character of Black Angel with the kitchen smells that had fascinated him when young. His career combines experience of the large fragrance industry with a desire for the creative freedom of independent work. Across those settings, an everyday smell or a vivid personal impression can become the starting point for a new composition.
