Zavelier · The perfumers
An early education in plants and a life transformed by migration
Loc Dong grew up in a village north of Saigon during the Vietnam War. His grandfather, a local healer, taught him to harvest and identify plants by smell while preparing remedies. Those experiences formed an early vocabulary of natural odours.
At eleven, Dong left Vietnam alone by boat, travelling first to Malaysia and eventually to the United States. His later professional life included work as a senior fine-fragrance perfumer at IFF in New York.
His projects have also connected perfume with other creative disciplines. In 2011, he made the limited-edition Black Rider for the Watermill Center’s benefit auction, marking artist and theatre director Robert Wilson’s seventieth birthday. The commission took its name from a Wilson production. Dong’s public accounts and projects reveal a career linking close knowledge of plants, deeply personal memory and the possibility of using fragrance in settings beyond the conventional commercial launch.
