Zavelier · The perfumers
An unexpected journey from economics to fragrance creation
Jorge Lee studied economics and had begun a banking career in Colombia when a recruiter contacted him about a marketing role at Quest International. Learning that the company made fragrances immediately changed his interest in the opportunity.
Once inside Quest, he was offered training first as an evaluator and then as a perfumer. His later career included the role of chief perfumer at MG International Fragrance Company in Istanbul, documented in a 2020 first-person profile.
Lee’s work extends beyond alcoholic perfume to fabric care and personal care. He has spoken about the particular challenge of making a fragrance perform convincingly in bar soap, including transparent glycerine formats. Local materials such as Turkish rose and mastic also interest him, alongside woods, whose strength requires careful control. His career combines an understanding of clients and markets with the technical and creative demands of composing for different uses.
