An English family perfumery and a commitment to teaching the craft
John Stephen is the owner and chief perfumer of the Cotswold Perfumery in Bourton-on-the-Water. The business grew from his father’s interest in fragrance in the 1960s and a later shop established by his mother.
After his mother’s death in the mid-1970s, Stephen took responsibility for the business. Alongside its own products, the perfumery developed commissions for other fragrance houses, creating perfumes sold under different names in Britain and overseas.
The workshop remains connected with the village shop, based in a historic building rather than a conventional industrial setting. Stephen also introduced one-day perfume courses in 2003, followed by further opportunities for practical study. His career brings together independent composition, the running of a family business and the teaching of a specialist craft. The fragrance credits below represent one part of a professional life that also includes many bespoke and commercially commissioned projects.
