Zavelier · The perfumers
An inventive idea, completed through the patience of an artisan
Jacques Huclier is a perfumer whose career at Givaudan has included work for international fragrance brands and independent houses. His credits include Mugler’s A*Men and a sustained creative relationship with Map of the Heart.
In an interview with Map of the Heart, Huclier described his role as occupying a space between artist and artisan. The first idea calls for invention; refining it into a finished formula requires trained judgement and technical craft. Knowing when to stop modifying a perfume can be one of the hardest decisions.
Travel and working in different markets have also informed his practice. He has discussed differences between American and European fragrance preferences, and the new impressions offered by living in New York. For Map of the Heart, Australian sandalwood supplied a recurring connection with the brand’s origins. His approach brings together a clear creative concept, sensitivity to a house’s world and the patient work of balancing a composition.
