Zavelier · The perfumers
Layered compositions and a generous approach to teaching
Guy Robert came from a family of perfumers, following his grandfather, father and uncle Henri Robert into the profession. His career produced a broad body of work, including Madame Rochas, Hermès Calèche and Équipage, Dior Dioressence and Amouage Gold.
These compositions are often discussed for their layered, fully developed structures. Robert nevertheless resisted the idea that quality depended simply on complexity: a successful perfume had to be convincing and pleasurable in the experience of wearing it.
He also shared his knowledge through teaching, lectures and the book Les Sens du Parfum. A tribute published after his death in May 2012 recalled his curiosity, humour and willingness to help students and colleagues, even after retirement. His legacy therefore extends beyond individual formulas. It includes a practical understanding of composition and a commitment to making the often-hidden work of a perfumer more accessible to others.
