Fanny Bal | Perfumer

Zavelier · The perfumers

Scientific study, a determined vocation and the lessons of mentorship

Fanny Bal began studying chemistry in Lyon before discovering that perfumery offered a more creative use of her scientific interests. She entered ISIPCA and gained early experience at IFF, where her professional development included mentorship with Dominique Ropion.

In interviews, Bal stresses perseverance as much as inspiration. Learning to compose involves repeated invention and revision, with technical structure supporting creativity. Having benefited from experienced teachers, she also sees the transmission of knowledge as an essential part of the profession.

Her commissions include Masque Milano’s Hemingway and Madeleine, as well as Penhaligon’s The Omniscient Mr Thompson and AlUla. For AlUla, she began with incense and the history of the place, then shaped the perfume around that centre. The project gives a practical example of her approach: identify a convincing subject, explore its possibilities and refine it until the idea becomes a complete fragrance.
