Zavelier · The perfumers
From a garden laboratory to some of perfume’s most recognisable creations
Édouard Fléchier was born in Grasse in 1949. Fascinated by the perfume factory where his father worked, he set up a small laboratory in the family garden. After secondary school, he entered Roure’s perfumery school and studied with Marcel Carles, continuing the teaching tradition established by Jean Carles.
In 1977, he joined Roure’s Paris creative team under Jean Amic. His work from the following decade includes Courrèges in Blue, Dior Poison and Montana Parfum de Peau. After the Givaudan-Roure merger, he spent six years at Mane before joining Guerlain in 2004.
At Guerlain, his responsibilities included olfactory control and necessary reformulations, an important part of preserving a house’s fragrance identity. His collaboration with Frédéric Malle produced Lys Méditerranée and Une Rose, subsequently renamed Rose Tonnerre. Fléchier’s career therefore connects major original launches, independent creative commissions and the quieter work of maintaining existing perfumes.
