Zavelier · The perfumers
Technical structure, sensory invention and the sharing of knowledge
Domitille Michalon-Bertier’s early scent memories connect two different worlds: the sophistication of Shalimar and L’Heure Bleue, and the lush, green landscapes of a childhood period in Vanuatu.
After studying organic chemistry, she trained with perfumers at IFF and at ISIPCA. Her first creation, By Woman for Dolce & Gabbana, incorporated an early exploration of living-flower scent technology around tiger lily. Her wider portfolio includes shared work on Flowerbomb and compositions such as B. Balenciaga.
Michalon-Bertier is interested in the relationship between technical knowledge and imagination, comparing perfumery with architecture. Both require a strong foundation to give a creative idea a convincing structure. She has also taken an active role in mentoring younger perfumers at IFF. In an interview about apprenticeship, she explained that formal study provides the basics, while independence develops through years of practical work, experimentation and exchange with experienced creators.
