Dominique Ropion remembers experiencing the world through smell from childhood. Growing up in Paris, his early olfactory memories included the Métro, warm tar and his mother’s perfume, rather than only the flowers more commonly associated with a perfumer’s vocation.

His long creative relationship with Frédéric Malle began at Laboratoires Roure-Bertrand. That partnership developed through a shared appetite for experimentation and for taking a fragrance idea further, testing possibilities and returning to a formula until its elements achieved the intended balance.

Carnal Flower, Portrait of a Lady and Promise are among the results. Each gives a different perspective on his ability to develop a strong central subject into a complete, distinctive perfume. Ropion has described an important fragrance as one with a new identity and a recognisable trail. His work combines that ambition with exacting attention to proportion, the behaviour of materials and the experience of the composition on skin.
