Zavelier · The perfumers
Childhood landscapes, shared memories and a Parisian creative practice
David Chieze recalls an early contrast between the green smells of northern France and the dry, aromatic landscape of the south. On a childhood walk, rosemary and thyme growing wild made a particularly lasting impression.
In a 2025 interview, he described working for the Swiss fragrance house LUZI, with his creative base in Paris alongside Mark Buxton. By then, he had spent around a decade composing fragrances. The arrangement connected an international fragrance business with close day-to-day creative exchange.
Personal memory remains important in his account. Dior’s Fahrenheit, worn by both his grandfather and father, became an olfactory link between generations. His work for Gravel’s Eau D’Ominance explored another narrative, involving strength, duality and identity. These examples show how a fragrance may begin with a familiar smell or a more abstract subject, then develop through the perfumer’s choice of materials and the structure of the finished formula.
