Zavelier · The perfumers
A career visible through late twentieth-century fragrance
Christian Mathieu’s published record is best traced through the perfumes he created and the people who worked alongside him. Per Fumum’s heritage interview with evaluator Élisabeth Mathieu-Madeleine places him among the generations of perfumers she encountered during her career in fragrance development.
His credited work includes Jacomo de Jacomo, launched in 1980, Kenzo pour Homme in 1991 and Givenchy Insensé Ultramarine in 1994. These fragrances belong to distinct moments in the development of masculine perfume, from the fuller structures of the early 1980s to the fresh and marine directions that became prominent in the following decade.
Mathieu’s body of work also includes compositions for other fashion and fragrance houses. Exploring the individual perfumes offers a more reliable introduction to his career than assigning a single signature style to such a varied portfolio. The selection below focuses on the work available at Zavelier.
