Zavelier · The perfumers
A musical education and an apprenticeship in fragrance structure
Benoist Lapouza grew up in Normandy, dividing his time between the sea and the music conservatory, where he trained as a cellist. Meeting Pierre Bourdon gave direction to his ambition to become a perfumer.
He apprenticed with Bourdon at Takasago, followed him to Quest and then joined him at Fragrance Resources in 1993. Lapouza later moved to Drom’s Paris fine-fragrance team in 2014. His work includes Live Jazz for Yves Saint Laurent, Dolly Girl for Anna Sui and British Bouquet for Atkinsons, alongside several shared creations.
For Rose Desgranges, Lapouza was entrusted with reinterpreting an archived formula while preserving its essential structure. His account of the project focuses on selecting high-quality floral ingredients and rebuilding their balance for a contemporary composition. It offers a particularly clear example of his craft: understanding what gives a perfume its identity, then finding the materials and proportions that can carry that identity forward.
