Zavelier · The perfumers
An independent voice driven by the emotional power of smell
Antoine Lie grew up in Strasbourg, outside the traditional perfume-making families of Grasse. He remembers forming strong attachments to everyday smells as a child. At fourteen, a gift of fragrance oils gave him a first opportunity to explore perfume materials directly.
After chemistry studies and persistent efforts to enter the industry, he joined the Roure perfumery school in Grasse in 1989. Decades of work within major fragrance houses followed before he became fully independent in 2019.
Lie describes independence as an important creative turning point, allowing him to choose projects and develop a more direct relationship with clients. In a first-person interview about formative perfumes, he singled out Grey Flannel as an early experience of fragrance’s emotional force. That interest in what a smell can communicate—beyond an appealing list of ingredients—provides a useful starting point for exploring the variety of his work below.
