Zavelier · The perfumers
A Californian path to the perfume traditions of Grasse
Alexander Lee, also known as Alex Lee, grew up in California and collected perfumes as a teenager. He became interested not only in their smells but in the people and history behind them. An encounter with a retired fragrance scientist helped him see that this interest could become a profession.
Lee moved to France to study, with Grasse providing a close connection to natural raw materials and the craft of composition. In a letter supporting recognition of Grasse’s perfume heritage, he described that training as the beginning of his professional journey.
For Masque Milano’s Ray-Flection, he returned to his discovery of mimosa in the flowering hills around Tanneron. The brief’s bright, almost neon colour became an olfactory idea: a golden floral effect built through unusual associations and generous proportions. It is a useful example of how a place, a material and a visual impression can come together in his compositions.
